Bill basics
What happens above 6,000 kWh?
Understand the upper residential tier without applying the higher price to the entire month.
The threshold is marginal
At 6,500 kWh, the first 6,000 kWh remain at SAR 0.18 and only 500 kWh are charged at SAR 0.30. The pre-VAT energy charge is therefore SAR 1,230—not 6,500 multiplied by the upper rate.
Why incremental cost changes
An appliance that pushes a household across 6,000 kWh has a blended incremental cost. BaytMeter’s future comparison mode will calculate the difference between the bill before and after the device, rather than multiplying all device energy by one rate.
Billing-period caution
This guide assumes a normal monthly reading. Unusual reading periods and official adjustments require the current Electricity Service Guide; the calculator does not infer those edge cases.
A crossing-the-threshold example
Suppose a household would use 5,800 kWh and an added load consumes 400 kWh. The first 200 added kWh remain in the lower tier and the next 200 fall in the upper tier. Its incremental pre-VAT energy cost is therefore SAR 36 plus SAR 60, or SAR 96.
The baseline moves by season
A home may stay below the threshold in mild months and cross it during peak cooling months. Use several representative bills rather than one annual average when evaluating an appliance. A purchase that appears inexpensive in winter can have a different incremental cost during a hot billing period.
Daily targets are only guides
Dividing 6,000 kWh by the number of billing days can create a useful monitoring target, but the official charge is based on the billing period, not a separate daily tier. Reading length and corrections matter, so treat daily consumption as an early-warning signal rather than a bill calculation.
Where an avoided kWh helps first
While total monthly use remains above 6,000 kWh, the next avoidable kWh is in the upper tier and reduces the pre-VAT energy charge by SAR 0.30. Once consumption falls below the threshold, additional avoided energy is valued at the lower rate. This is arithmetic, not a guaranteed saving claim.
