Troubleshooting
Why did my electricity bill rise?
A measured home check before blaming one appliance or the meter.
Separate usage from account items
Compare kWh with the previous period, not only the final amount due. Check the reading period, previous balance, meter-service fee and any account adjustment separately.
Look for schedule changes
More cooling hours, a lower thermostat, guests, school holidays or a newly installed device can change consumption even when no appliance is faulty.
Measure before replacing
Use an appropriately rated energy-monitoring device for plug-in appliances and compare several normal days. For fixed wiring, AC faults or suspected meter issues, use a qualified professional and the provider’s official complaint process.
Normalize by billing days
Two bills with different reading lengths should not be compared only by total kWh. Divide consumption by billing days to obtain average kWh per day, then compare similar seasons. This does not replace the official bill calculation, but it prevents a longer period from looking like an unexplained efficiency loss.
Create a change log
List thermostat settings, occupancy, guests, travel, new appliances, maintenance and unusual weather for each period. Match each change to the date it began. A simple timeline often explains a step change more reliably than testing every appliance at once.
Use a safe isolation sequence
Start with bill fields and schedules, then inspect accessible labels and plug-in measurements. Do not disconnect protective devices, open panels or interfere with sealed metering equipment. Fixed-wiring tests, leakage concerns and suspected equipment faults require the provider or a qualified professional.
Prepare evidence for escalation
Keep the bill, meter readings or photos taken safely, billing dates, daily averages and a short change log. Contact the provider through its official channel when readings or account items remain unexplained. BaytMeter estimates can organize questions but are not evidence that the meter is defective.
