What changes a room AC capacity estimate?

Room area is only the beginning; exposure, insulation, height and people change the result.

The room envelope

Length and width establish floor area, while high ceilings increase the air volume. Windows, sun exposure and weak insulation add heat that the AC must remove.

Internal heat

People, lighting, cooking and equipment add heat. Open-plan rooms and kitchens can depart substantially from a simple bedroom estimate.

Screening, not engineering

BaytMeter rounds a transparent planning estimate up to a marketed capacity. A qualified designer should perform a detailed load calculation for large glazing, unusual construction, open layouts or central systems.

Windows and orientation matter

Large unshaded glazing and afternoon sun can add a substantial load, while effective external shading can reduce it. Record window area, direction and shading rather than describing the room only by floor area. Roof exposure also matters for top-floor rooms in hot weather.

Open doors change the zone

A unit selected for one closed bedroom may serve a much larger effective area when doors stay open to a corridor or adjoining room. Decide which spaces must be conditioned together and measure that zone. Kitchens and frequent door opening require extra professional attention.

Too small and too large both have costs

An undersized unit can run for long periods without reaching the target. A substantially oversized fixed-speed unit may cycle frequently, reduce comfort and waste the price premium. The goal is a defensible load match, not automatically choosing the next larger marketed size.

Installation affects delivered performance

Correct refrigerant work, airflow, drainage, electrical supply and placement influence real performance. A capacity estimate cannot compensate for poor installation. Ask for documented installation scope and commissioning, and use a qualified contractor where local rules or equipment requirements demand one.
