Compare ACs
Inverter or fixed-speed AC without exaggerated claims
Compare purchase premium, verified consumption and simple payback using your own pattern.
Compare like with like
Use two units with similar cooling capacity and installation scope. A cheaper undersized unit and a larger premium unit are not a clean technology comparison.
Prefer verified consumption
Annual label kWh or model-specific electrical inputs are stronger than a generic claim that inverter technology always saves one fixed percentage.
Payback is conditional
Simple payback divides the additional installed price by estimated annual savings. It excludes financing, repairs and uncertain future tariff changes, so treat it as one decision aid rather than a promise.
Build a common baseline
Record the same required capacity, installation work, warranty scope, voltage and room conditions for both options. Include brackets, piping, electrical upgrades and removal work in the installed price. Technology labels alone do not make two quotes comparable when their scope differs.
Calculate a range of paybacks
Use verified annual kWh when available. Otherwise compare low, expected and high operating scenarios with the same tariff. Divide the installed-price premium by each annual saving to produce a payback range. If annual saving is zero or negative, there is no energy payback in that scenario.
Part-load behavior depends on the home
Variable-speed control can be valuable when the unit spends long periods maintaining temperature below peak load. The outcome still depends on sizing, envelope, controls and usage. A room with brief occasional operation can produce a very different payback from a heavily used bedroom.
Include non-energy differences
Noise, comfort stability, warranty, repair access and expected service life can matter alongside electricity. State them separately instead of assigning invented monetary savings. A longer energy payback may still be acceptable for comfort, while a short modeled payback may be unattractive if service support is weak.
