Why an AC’s BTU capacity is not electricity use

Two different jobs

BTU/h measures the cooling delivered to a room. Watts measure electrical input at a given operating condition. Two 18,000 BTU/h units can therefore have different electrical input and annual consumption.

Use label evidence

Prefer annual energy consumption, SEER information and rated electrical input from a verified Saudi efficiency label. Do not estimate power by converting BTU directly to watts.

Usage still matters

Even verified label values represent standardized conditions. Set hours, days and load assumptions to match your household, then test a reasonable range rather than one perfect-looking number.

Efficiency connects the units

Cooling output and electrical input are related through efficiency, not by treating them as the same quantity. A more efficient unit can deliver similar cooling with less electrical energy under standardized conditions. Use the verified seasonal-efficiency and annual-consumption fields instead of inventing a direct BTU-to-watt conversion.

Same capacity, different bills

Two units rated at 18,000 BTU/h can differ in compressor control, heat-exchanger design, standby demand and seasonal efficiency. Installation quality and room load also affect operation. Capacity is therefore a filter for suitability, while label energy and a realistic schedule support the cost comparison.

Do not solve sizing with efficiency

A highly efficient but undersized unit may run continuously and still miss the comfort target. An oversized unit may cycle frequently and perform poorly at part load. Select a defensible capacity first, then compare efficiency and ownership cost among models that meet the same cooling requirement.

A fair comparison checklist

Confirm exact model, cooling capacity, rated electrical input, seasonal efficiency, annual consumption, installation scope and warranty. Then apply the same hours, thermostat scenario and tariff to both models. If one field is missing, show the uncertainty rather than replacing it with a marketing percentage.
